A Wimbledon church is considering closing its doors during the day following the "distressing" theft of a charity box.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information after the box, which had been marked as collecting money for deprived communities, was kicked from the wall by a man who then fled the scene with it.

The incident happened in the Christ the King Parish Church in Arthur Road, at 12.40pm on Wednesday, July 22.

The church had only recently started opening its doors to the community during the day but would now have to re-think this, police said.

Police constable Paul Roberts, from Wimbledon Park Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: "This is particularly distressing for the Church and the community as they have only recently adopted an ‘open door’ policy throughout the day.

"Because of this incident they are now considering closing their doors which would clearly have a negative impact on those wishing to visit the church."

The suspect is described as white with fair short hair, aged 18 to 24 years and of slim build. He was wearing a hooded grey top, black jeans and trainers.
