The All England Lawn Tennis Club was evacuated after a fire started in a plant room.

London Fire Brigade said about 3,000 people were asked to leave the grounds as a precaution on Wednesday night.

Fire officers were called just after 9pm to a plant room which went up in flames near The Wingfield Restaurant on the first floor of the Centre Court building.

Eighteen firefighters from Wandsworth, Fulham and Battersea stations joined volunteer fire officers already stationed at the club to extinguish the blaze.

The fire had taken hold of about a quarter of the room but was under control just after 10pm.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

But an All England Lawn Tennis Club spokesman wrote on Twitter it was suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault.

All matches were over one hour before the fire started.
