A 22-year-old man was stabbed in the hand near Waitrose in a violent robbery last night.

The victim was mugged at knifepoint in Alexandra Road near Wimbledon Station at about 6.15pm.

A witness, who does not want to be named, said she parked her car near Wimbledon Magistrates' Court at about 6.30pm and saw the blood-streaked man run past her in pursuit of his attackers.

It is understood the muggers tried to take their victim's phone, but he would not let go so they slashed his hand repeatedly.

The witness said: "I was parked up and the guy who'd been hurt ran past me. He was running after the people who'd mugged him."

She added: "He tried to keep hold of his phone. I don't think it was massively serious. I think he was going to be alright but he was in a bit of a state."

It is understood the injured man was with a group of friends, who called the police.

London Ambulance attended and took the wounded man to hospital. He has since been discharged.

A 21-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of robbery.

He was taken to a south London police station and was later bailed, to return on a date in June.

Detectives from Merton are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101.
