Nearly £4,000 has been donated in a few days to create a memorial for hero Nick Mann, killed by an Underground train at Old Street station.

A fundraising page set up by his wife Jennifer Kavanagh has been shared 342 times by friends and family who have already donated £3,390 since Friday.

The original target of £1,000 has been smashed.

Mr Mann, 35, a journalist and music writer who lived in Colliers Wood, was killed as he tried to save his brother Robert, 32, at Old Street station amid a report he had jumped down to retrieve a wallet or a phone.

Mr Mann, who lived in Colliers Wood with his wife Ms Kavanagh, tried to pull his younger brother to safety but suffered severe head injuries after both were struck by a train at 12.20am on Sunday, March 29.

Ms Kavanagh said: "As his wife, I'd like to create a memorial to Nick, but as of yet I'm not sure exactly what this might be.

"Nick's ashes will be laid to rest in Shrewsbury, alongside his beloved grandparents, but I'd like to have a small memorial, be it a tree or something similar, in London and Manchester too, allowing friends and family to visit him and be reminded of his amazing soul wherever they may be.

"Donations to this fund will ensure we can create something fitting."

Shesaid he was a loving husband, brother, son, friend, football supporter, "gig attender" and "beer sharer" and he was missed by everyone who knew him.

As well as the memorial, Ms Kavanagh will make donations in his memory to charities including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which Mr Mann donated to regularly, the London Air Ambulance and the Royal London Hospital in east London which treated Mr Mann and continues to care for his brother.

Friends and family have been able to leave messages on the page.

One of the tributes from Stephen Hardwick, who donated to the fund, said: "Such a fantastic man. Gifted, funny and just really, really nice."

Chris and Kathryn Nutt said: "We both admired Nick so much. We will always remember him."
