A whopping £20,000 was raised at the mayor of Merton’s final charity ball, complete with African dancing and colourful table decorations.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club hosted the event on Saturday night which featured live music from singer songwriter Hannah May, entertainment from the Shidda Culture Dance Troupe, the Rockafellas and DJ Staga.

Fundraising activities on the night included an auction, a tombola and two raffles.

Among the attendees were local councillors and mayors from the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Kingston, Hammersmith and Fulham and Wandsworth.

The money was raised from ticket sales for the ball, sponsors and activities on the night.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina said: "Thanks to everyone who attended the ball.

"It was a fantastic night with great entertainment and I was pleased to see so many familiar faces and other mayors from across London coming to show their support and enjoying themselves.

"I’d also like to thank everyone who generously donated money, which my charities will be very grateful for."

The mayor’s charities, Shooting Star CHASE Children’s Hospice, Merton Street Pastors, the Colour House Theatre and HPCT Pilgrimage Trust will all benefit from the funding boost.

Councillor David Chung will be taking over the role of mayor from Wednesday, May 13.
