A blaze engulfed a family's garage last night after a fridge freezer caught fire.

Firefighters were called to a semi-detached house in North Close in Morden at about 4.30am after a family was woken up by a smoke alarm.

After realising the fire had started in the garage, the home owner closed the garage door and called the fire brigade.

Wimbledon fire station sent four engines to the blaze and extinguished the fire in about 40 minutes.

Golf clubs and CDs were among personal possessions which melted in the blaze, which has completely destroyed the interior of the garage.

A firefighter said the fire was believed to be cause by an electrical fault and the family will have to replace the garage roof.

No-one was injured in the blaze.
