Sixth formers studying A Level physics were inspired by a visit to the Large Hadron Collider the day before it was re-activated.

A group of 20 Year 12 and 13 pupils from Wimbledon’s Ricards Lodge High School and Rutlish School were inspired by the enormous size of the ground-breaking experiment near Geneva in Switzerland over Easter.

Scientists are trying to uncover what the universe was like in the milliseconds after the Big Bang and recently re-vamped and re-started it to begin a more in-depth experiment into the creation of the universe.

Students also visited the UN Palace of Nations, the History of Science Museum and the historic centre of Geneva as part of the trip.

Trip leader and physics teacher Helen Ryan said: "It was a memorable trip and one that we hope will motivate our students to take up physics as a university degree and a career."
