An 18-year-old man is still recovering after a brutal stabbing outside a community centre left him in intensive care.

Police are investigating the stabbing outside the New Horizon Community Centre in South Lodge Avenue at about 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 17.

The teenager received a stab wound close to his liver and was dragged inside the Pollards Hill youth centre by a member of staff who then called an ambulance, a source said.

It is understood the assault was a revenge attack following a fight in the car park earlier in the day.

The attack was reported to the Wimbledon Guardian by a councillor but not publicised at the time by police.

The teenager was reported to have spent three days in intensive care following the attack. But police said today his condition was now stable.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

The assault follows three further non-fatal stabbings in the same street between June and October last year.

At a heated public meeting in the New Horizon Centre in November, residents called on police to do more to tackle open air drug-dealing reported in the street.

Councillor Jeff Hanna, who represents Pollards Hill and has campaigned for more police officers in Mitcham, said he was disappointed not to see more neighbourhood officers on patrol in the area following the stabbing.
