An investigation has been re-opened into a Merton policeman banned from going to brothels or contacting sex workers as he awaits trial on harassment and sexual assault charges.

PC Irshad Kamal, 46, a police constable formerly based in Wimbledon police station, was due to appear in court to enter a plea last week but the case has been adjourned due to his ill health and a new investigation.

The investigation into whether he could face further charges is ongoing.

He has not yet entered a plea to two charges - one of harassment and one of sexual assault, which includes sexual touching of a woman without consent.

The Metropolitan Police said the alleged offences took place while PC Kamal was off duty.

He has been suspended from duty while the case goes through the courts after he was charged in November last year.

PC Kamal, of Bramfield Road, Wandsworth, was due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, March 19 but it was adjourned to Wednesday, April 29 at the same court.

He has been released on bail.
