Five people from the same estate have appeared at a magistrates' court on separate charges in just seven days.

The men and a woman all live in Sadler Close in Mitcham, an estate which residents say is plagued with drug-dealing and anti-social behaviour.

Offences range from possession of a kitchen knife at Sutton Police Station, causing nearly £2,000 worth of damage to a flat in Wimbledon and breaching a non-molestation order.

Marion Hyde, 87, who is secretary of Sadler Close Residents' Association said: "I think there's quite a few drug dealings in the three buildings.

"You know youngsters are involved in it and you do get youngsters breaking into the corridors."

But she said she feels safe living on the estate and is more concerned about repairs being carried out by housing association Circle Housing Merton Priory (CHMP), which manages the estate.

Councillor Peter Walker, who represents Figge's Marsh, said: "There's always been a problem with Sadler Close because of the design and particularly the garages underneath which are open to anyone who want to go in there.

"The police opened an office in Figge's Marsh that was closed about a year ago and that's exactly where we need a police office."

He said he has been speaking to CHMP about the possibility of future design improvements on the estate.

He also said residents will benefit from Merton Council's £6m redevelopment of Fair Green, which will see Holburn Way narrowed, improving access for Sadler Close residents to the town centre.

But Merton Police said they were not aware of any "particular problems" on the estate.

A spokeswoman said: "In that area roughly 600 people live there, five out of that many does not reflect a particular problem in that location."

Three of the offences took place in February, one occurred in December and another took place between 2010 and 2014.

Councillor Edith Macauley, cabinet member for community safety, engagement and equalities, said: “While we’ve had no direct reports of any issues at Sadler Close, we continue to work closely with the police, our partners and the local community to make Mitcham a good place to live and work.

"Mitcham is a great community and our investment in the town centre will benefit the local area and all residents.”
