Parents have been left in turmoil after being informed their children's nursery could close from April.

Staff at the Brightchoice Nursery, based in the Harris Academy Morden, were told in October that Merton Council would not be able to renew its lease on the site and is now trying to find a suitable new home.

A parent who contacted the Wimbledon Guardian said she was unhappy to have only been told about it on February 10, leaving her just eight weeks to find an alternative nursery for her daughter.

A spokesman for the Harris Federation said Brightchoice Nursery is run by Jancett Day Nurseries and is not part of Harris Academy Morden although it leases the space from the council.

The parent said: "They have basically dumped us parents and our children and left us to fend for ourselves.

"I feel this is utterly disgusting and would like it brought to the attention of all people even thinking of attending Jancett nurseries to reconsider and never use them and be put in the situation a lot of us are now in."

But Jancett Day Nurseries managing director Chris Pritchard said they have been trying to find alternative premises.

Mrs Pritchard said: "We have been told the nursery needs to close because the school wants its premises back.

"I have been to the local authority and a series of other people to try to find somewhere - I am still in negotiations with them."

She said eight weeks was a very adequate amount of notice and she did not know when the nursery would actually be closing as they were allowed to stay on the site until the end of the summer.

The Harris Federation spokesman said: "It has been leasing an area of Harris Academy Morden’s site from Merton Council.

"On October 14 last year Merton Council informed the nursery that it would not be able to renew the lease beyond its expiry this year."

A nursery spokesman said: "“We sympathise with parents and understand how disappointing this must be to have received this news and we have actively offered alternative settings to all the children.  We continue to look for new premises in close proximity to Brightchoice and will keep parents informed when we have been successful”.
