AFC Wimbledon fans are calling for club supporters to back the return to Plough Lane in writing.

Bring The Dons Home - an independent campaign run by a group of AFC Wimbledon fans, is urging residents and fans to write to Merton Council in support of the new stadium.

The club has formally submitted detailed plans for a 20,000 seater football stadium, 602 flats, shops, parking and a squash and fitness club to Merton Council, which could be built in phases.

The multi-million pound plans to bring the club back to its home borough were unveiled on Thursday, December 11.

A consultation process began immediately for people to comment and will be open until January 19.

The statutory consultation time is three weeks but the council extended it to five weeks.

The campaign, called Write Now, will officially launch at the club’s home game against Mansfield on Saturday, with leaflets being handed out. Player Andy Frampton will sign his letter to the council at half time.

Marc Jones, one of the founders of the club who has helped in the Write Now campaign, said: "I was involved in the fight for us not to go to Crystal Palace and Dublin.

"It is nice to be campaigning for something positive for a change."

The group is urging people to write to the council planning officer in support of the application which will be considered by the planning committee in the spring of next year.

Mr Jones said: "I live near to where the stadium will be built.

"I want it to be done; I think the football club deserves to be there.

"I would say the same thing if I was an Arsenal fan."
