A disabled man is unable to eat in his own home because of the overpowering stench of sewage.

Wayne Lawrence said the foul smell of sewage coming out of drains in the back garden of his council house is too much to bear.

Although the three-bedroom home in Bishopsford Road, Morden, which he shares with his wife and children is a Sutton Council property, the drains are the responsibility of Thames Water.

A spokeswoman from Thames Water said they had not been notified of the problem but would now contact Mr Lawrence and take action.

Mr Lawrence said: "It is disgusting.

"I have got no help from anyone.

"I can’t eat indoors and have to go out to eat because the smell is everywhere.

"The neighbours have complained as well."

Mr Lawrence surveys the damage.

Mr Lawrence, 44, who has children aged eight-years-old and eleven-years-old, is registered disabled and is blind in one eye. He has problems with his leg and had his arm amputated last year.

"I don’t need this on top of that," he said.

He reported the problem to Sutton Council early last week and said he was in contact with an officer there.

But the council press office said the issue was the responsibility of Thames Water.

Mr Lawrence said he had been in touch with a private company to send a sewage tanker out to the home because he could not face living with the stench any longer.

He said the same thing happened two years ago.

A Thames Water spokeswoman said: "Until we received a call from the Wimbledon Guardian we weren’t aware of any recent sewage issues at the property. We’ve called the customer and arranged to visit him to investigate the problem."
