Thousands of pounds is up for grabs for good causes in Merton thanks to an exciting new scheme by a local charity.

The Admiral Trust, set up in 2012, is calling on people to nominate good causes in the borough to win a £2,000 award.

A shortlist of six will be chosen and put on the charity's website on September 30, and the names of the winning three will be announced at a fundraising indoor racing night it is holding at The Hub in Mitcham next month.

The overall winner will receive the money at once, the runner-up by March next year, and the third prizewinner by next August.

You can nominate a charity for an award, a not for profit organisation or even an individual who needs money for a good cause.

Trust chairman Terry Withers said: "The Admiral Trust is determined to bring together all the goodwill we've seen in Merton to make changes to lives; even what seems to be a small change can make an enormous difference day to day difference, but we can't do this alone.

"We need to know where the need is! Please nominate a cause or a charity and then join us on the night to have fun, become a Friend of The Admiral Trust, or offer time or a skill - help comes in many different forms."

Nominations must be made on the trust's website www.admiraltrust.org.uk by the closing date, September 22.

And make sure you are there when the awards are announced by booking a place at the race night on October 10. In addition to helping raise money for the worthwhile causes there will be a chance to win a few pounds for yourself by betting on the six horse races.

The evening starts at 7.30pm at The Hub, at Tooting and Mitcham Football Club. Tickets are £15 (over 16s only) which includes a fish and chip supper, or a vegetarian option, and the programme are available on the trust's website.
