Having recently enjoyed the all-singing all tap-dancing Top Hat I was looking forward to another classic musical by the same writer, Irving Berlin.

The Wild West came to the New Wimbledon Theatre this time, with an older audience packing into the venue to see household names Jason Donovan and Norman Pace on stage.

The story centres around gun-toting Annie Oakley (Emma Williams) who comes from humble, illiterate beginnings to battle it out for the championship sharpshooting title.

Love throws a spanner in the works, when Donovan’s character Frank Butler throws his toys out the pram after Oakley beats him in an earlier shooting competition.

Cue a song about how you can’t get a man with a gun, which is very well sung and accompanied by the live band who are on stage with the actors.

Olivier award nominated Williams got a louder cheer at the end of the night than Donovan and it was easy to see why.

Her vocals were seemingly flawless and her American accent didn’t drop once, unlike a couple of others.

Her character was quirky and playful at times, and there was an obvious development from beginning to end.

Alongside the enthusiastic musical theatre actors and actresses, Donovan’s vocals could not match the power of their delivery or their precision in the group dance routines.

Not a step was out of place, but an arm was not extended as far as others, or a leg not as high.

Donovan’s costumes were slick, however, with mid-length fitted coats and sharp cowboy boots.

The male cast got the better deal with costumes generally, as the women had corsets and short skirts to contend with.

Some highlights included Kara Lane’s bitchy Dolly Tate and the serene Chief Sitting Bull played by Ed Currie.

With a fun array of songs everyone knows, including There’s No Business Like Show Business and Anything You Can Do, Annie Get Your Gun is an entertaining show suitable for all ages.
