A retirement home, dedicated 34 years ago to disgraced television presenter Sir Jimmy Savile, is being renamed after complaints from customers.

Jimmy Savile House, a block of rented retirement flats based in Ridgway, Wimbledon, was dedicated to Savile after he officially unveiled it in 1978.

But, after this month’s avalanche of allegations about the BBC star being a serial paedophile, all signs displaying his name were removed.

Savile died in October 2011 but a police investigation is now underway into whether he was one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders.

Louise Buckley, a district manager for Anchor, the company running the retirement home, said the signs were removed after consulting with customers and senior managers.

She said: “We met with customers on Thursday October 18 and listened to their concerns about the continued use of the name.

“We are proposing that the scheme should be renamed simply 62 Ridgway, which is the name many customers have used for some time.”

An Anchor spokesman would not say how many complaints had been made about the continued use of Savile’s name, nor whether pictures existed of him visiting the building, which has 23 flats all currently occupied.
