Drivers and commuters need to beware of traffic problems when the Olympic torch comes through Wandsworth during rush hour on Monday.

The torch will at around 5.30pm along Wimbledon Park Road on its way to the celebration at Tooting Common where it will remain for the night.

The event is expected to have "a significant impact on traffic in the area".

Vehicles following behind the torch will only be able to travel at jogging speed whilst oncoming traffic will be held up on occasions by the police.

There are currently no planned road closures, but parking will be suspended the full length of Kimber Road and Dr Johnson Avenue, and the section of Bedford Hill directly adjacent to Tooting Common.

Spectators are advised to use public transport wherever possible and leave their cars at home. Some bus routes may be diverted to ease congestion.

After Wimbledon Park Road the torch passes along Granville Road, Merton Road, Kimber Road and Garratt Lane, which is often snarled-up during rush hour, where it should arrive by just before 6pm.

After travelling down Garratt Lane the procession will turn left down Upper Tooting Road where large crowds are expected to turn out because of the large number of businesses in the area.

At the end of Upper Tooting Road the relay will turn right onto Tooting Bec Road, arriving at approximately 6.30pm, before stopping on Tooting Bec Common about 20 minutes later.

The torch will stay overnight following an evening of celebration which will feature a selection of Olympians plus band Rizzle Kicks and a cauldron which will be lit by the flame.

But the torch will be back in the borough on Thursday (July 26) when it will pass through the north of the borough.
