Putney MP Justine Greening has been named as David Cameron's new transport secretary as the fallout from Secretary of State for Defence Liam Fox's resignation continues.

Miss Greening stepped into Philip Hammond shoes after the Weybridge MP inherited Dr Fox's ministerial position following his departure from Government last week.

She becomes the fifth woman in the Prime Minister's cabinet after a successful stint in the Treasury as Economic Secretary which began in 2010 following the general election.

The 42 year old was a vocal opponent of Labour's plans to build a third runway at Heathrow as Putney lies under its flight path.

Miss Greening was born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, and was educated at her local comprehensive school before studying economics at Southampton University.

A graduate of the London Business School, the MP worked in finance for a variety of companies, including positions at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, GlaxoSmithKline and Centrica, before entering Parliament. She was elected as the MP for Putney, Roehampton and Southfields in May 2005, then selected as a member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee.

In 2007 Miss Greening became a Shadow Treasury Minister and in January 2009 became the Shadow Minister for London.
