A raid by immigration officers on a Tooting restaurant is to be investigated after a man broke his legs trying to escape.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it would be checking whether procedures were properly followed during the pre-planned operation at the restaurant in Upper Tooting Road last Monday.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, ran from the rear of the building and an officer followed him onto the roof.

A short time later he was found on the ground and taken to hospital with two broken legs.

The operation was carried out by the UK Borders Agency, a Home Office agency which was established in February. It is responsible for immigration control and border security.

Nicholas Long, IPCC Commissioner with responsibility for UKBA, said: "This is our first investigation into an incident involving UKBA.

"I will be looking to establish whether operational policies and procedures were properly followed and whether any lessons can be learned from this incident."

I despair with law enforcement management that see's a suspect fleeing who manages to injure themselves in flight, as cause for "re-evaluating the laws or the procedures. Eluding an officer, resisting arrest, is itself a crime. As soon as this person is capable of being transported, he should be with prejudice against his re-entry.

It's a disgrace that some of these posts demonstrate such meanness of spirit. I hope we never have a govt we have to flee.

It seems to me that the majority of the problems that we have in the UK today, whether it be crime, lack of housing or over-stretched health and social services or sky-high taxes, you can put them all down to a government made up of incompetent, pathetic buffoons, who have totally miss-managed immigration and allowed this country to become overwhelmed.

Now after the horse has bolted they are trying to shut the stable door.

And if we did how many foreign countries do you think would take us in, give us housing, free medical treatment, free education and money every fortnight as well?
This is no longer a country it's a charity.
