THE annual Commons Open Day Fair was bathed in sunshine as more than 5,000 people turned out on Sunday.

Organisers, charitable group the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators, said they wanted to create a village fair atmosphere within the Common and bring a bit of the countryside to city life.

The focus on a small community vibe meant only stalls run by local businesses and charities were set up to advertise themselves, seek volunteers and donations or sell their products.

Included in the organisations looking to promote themselves was Wimbledon Bookfest.

The fortnight-long event, which launches on September 29, is into its 10th year and includes a marquee on the Common hosting talks and workshops. Guests include Ranulph Fiennes, Nick Clegg and Andy Hamilton Windmill museum on Wimbledon Common was also a beneficiary of the event, according to organisers, with more than 700 people visiting the Grade II listed building.
