Work could be back under way in the coming months at the Alchemist Pub in Battersea, which was demolished without permission in July last year.

Developer Udhyam Amim was ordered to rebuild the pub in St John's Hill brick by brick after Wandsworth Council officers visited the site last summer and discovered far more of the building had been knocked down than was permitted.

Wandsworth Times:

A new planning application has been submitted to attempt to restore the permission granted in 2010.

The application is for retrospective permission for the full demolition of the building, the first and second floor facade, with the retention of the ground floor facade and the rebuilding of first and second floor facade and an extension.

The side extension would fill the gap between The Alchemist at 225 and 223 St John's Hill, making the building a four bay design instead of a three bay design.

The future usage of the building is unclear, though an officer for Wandsworth Council said he hoped it would return to public house.

The application includes plans for six flats.

At the Wandsworth Conservation Advisory Committee on Monday evening, Mr Taylor, a member of the public who advises the council, said: "We have submitted an objection on the grounds that the whole scheme is now out of balance.

"With four bays, the mansard they have left is off centre.

"Several details have been added to the facade which we do not think are acceptable."

Mr Taylor suggested a fourth bay could be set back to preserve the street scape.

Wandsworth Times:

Peter Farrow, for the Wandsworth Society’s planning sub-committee, wrote: "We object to this application whether it is submitted to meet the terms of an enforcement notice or as a retrospective application for approval to unlawful demolition and the development of the site.

"We believe there is an unresolved enforcement notice, issued 24 July 2015, that requires The Alchemist to be restored to ‘its appearance prior to the demolition’ that will be satisfied by ‘restoring [it] to its appearance in drawing number E332/PP/003’. This drawing shows both the front and rear elevations of the building prior to demolition."

Mr Farrow's letter also states the information provided in the application is "inadequate and insufficient".

At the advisory committee, it was noted that the quality of drawings submitted with the application were "poor" and an officer said the council was pushing for higher quality drawings.

In January, a truck that had been tipping cement into the basement of the site fell backwards, hitting a gas main and causing an evacuation in St John's Hill.

No one was injured in the incident.

The truck was there until February when it was pulled out in an all-day operation that required road closures.
