A man was rescued from the first floor of Springfield Hospital on Sunday evening as a fire broke out.

January 27: Fire in disused building in Springfield Hospital "probably wasn't an accident"

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus to enter the building on the evening on February 7.

The rescued man and three other women suffered smoke inhalation.

They were treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service, before the man and two of the women were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Station manager Andy Walton who was at the scene, said: "When crews arrived they could see thick black smoke coming from the first floor of the building.

"Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly made their way to the affected part of the building through thick smoke to rescue a man who was still inside.

"They then returned to the room and extinguished the fire quickly, ensuring damaged to the rest of the building was minimised."

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers from Tooting, Wimbledon and Clapham fire stations attended the incident.

The brigade was called at 6.57pm and the fire was under control at 8.07pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Mandy Stevens, Director of Nursing at the hospital said: "The fire was quickly brought under control and contained.

"As a precautionary measure two staff members and a patient were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. They have since been safely discharged.

"I was on site and I was really impressed by everyone involved.

"I would like to thank the Fire Service for their quick response.

"Our staff were very professional and made sure that patients were safe and looked after throughout the whole incident."
