Plans to tear down a section of Putney High Street to build flats were rejected last week, to the joy of Better Putney.

Wandsworth Council’s planning applications committee met last week to discuss plans that would have seen 56-70 High Street, currently occupied by TK Maxx, Superdrug and Halfords, destroyed and replaced with an eight-storey structure, including 110 new flats.

Members of the planning applications committee highlighted what they saw as a series of faults – in particular that the “sheer size” was out of keeping with Putney’s existing high street Air quality was also considered, as was the development adding to the “canyon” effect and the loss of a children’s play centre.

The meeting included a presentation by officers recommending approval, after which Councillor John Maddan spoke on behalf of residents, putting across his main concerns.

The proposal was unanimously rejected, Speaking on behalf of Better Putney, Keith Hawkins said: “Thank you to everyone who made objections, fed in thoughts on what we should say, or generally gave their time, advice and encouragement. This sort of win doesn’t happen very often.

“The plans have been discredited, and while British Land could appeal, we hope they focus their efforts on engaging with the community to develop a better plan that thinks more about Putney.”
