Sadiq Khan has called on the Government to hurry up the introduction of the National Living Wage.

Chancellor George Osborne gave his budget to Parliament last Wednesday and announced raising the National Living Wage to £9 an hour by 2020.

Higher wages seem like a positive proposal at first glance, said the Tooting MP but: "Londoners can’t afford to wait till 2020 for a living wage and they won’t have to if I become Mayor.

"From my first day in office I will make a difference by making sure that every worker employed through the Mayor’s £3bn worth of procurement is paid the London living wage - £9.15 per hour and work towards a rate of £10."

Osborne’s new housing policy and his statement on the right to buy for housing association tenants was also challenged by Mr Khan, who said: "London has a chronic housing crisis - selling off affordable homes without a guarantee to replace them will not make the difference Londoners need.

"My amendment to the Government’s proposed legislation on sales of housing association and council homes will make the difference Londoners need - it will enshrine into law that for every social home sold a like for like replacement must be built."
