Residents were evacuated from a block of flats in Nightingale Lane, near Clapham South station, after a smoke alarm went off in the flat where the fire started.

Eight residents left the fourth floor of the block and all escaped injury.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters from Tooting, Clapham and Battersea fire stations were called to the blaze at 4.32am on Monday, June 15, and it was brought under control at 5.37am.

Firefighters contained the fire to the living room of the flat and are urging people to ensure they have working smoke alarms.

Watch manager John Kiernan said: “The smoke alarm did its job and warned the residents of the flat of the danger facing them.

“It is vitally important that everyone has at least one smoke alarm on every level of their home and test it regularly as it gives you early warning of a fire in your home.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
