Redevelopment plans for Tooting Constitutional Club received firm opposition from councillors last week, but the site's fate remains uncertain.
The applicant wants to demolish the buildings and build 46 flats and commercial units in up to seven storeys, with the existing large green space at the rear lost.
Wandsworth Council's planning committee voted against the plans on Thursday, May 21, but the scheme could still go ahead after the developer lodged an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate.
The final decision now rests with the Secretary of State, who will be advised on the case by a planning inspector following a public inquiry.
Councillors said the scale, size and bulk of the proposals would be “unneighbourly” and would result in an “unacceptable level of harm to the visual amenity of the immediate surroundings and additional overlooking of neighbouring properties”.
