Umbrellas were set alight outside a popular Clapham pub and a neighbouring restaurant in the early hours of this morning.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) received multiple reports of a fire outside The King and Co, in Clapham Park Road. An umbrella was also set alight outside Layali Lounge.

LFB sent four fire engine to the blaze, which took place at about 3am. The heat of the fire smashed the pub's windows.

The owner of King and Co, Anthony Gunson, lives above the pub. He estimated the damage to the umbrellas, benches, windows and fence will cost between £5,000 and £10,000.

He said: “Luckily my housemate managed to wake me, and the other guys upstairs had already been woken up.

Wandsworth Times:

“My housemate called the fire brigade and they attended incredibly quickly. Otherwise it would have spread to the neighbours and caused serious damage.

“I just remember running downstairs and seeing the Fire Brigade putting out fires. It is all a bit of a blur this morning. It was just carnage.”

Wandsworth Times:

Burnt out: Layali Lounge also had an umbrella set alight

Mr Gunson said he expects the pub to reopen tomorrow.

No-one was hurt in the fire and the blaze is being investigated by the police.
