Teams of architects and engineers from across the world are going head-to-head in a competition to design a new £40m foot and cycle bridge from Nine Elms to Pimlico.
Nine Elms: A new bridge to Pimlico will complete the development
Competitors, who cannot yet be named because of EU rules, have qualified to compete to design the massive River Thames project.
The teams, from 16 different countries, include a mix of world-renowned architects and engineers.
In a few weeks, competitors will submit their first design ideas, which will go on public display - with the designers’ names withheld.
In March, the competition’s jury panel will recommend a shortlist of up to four teams to go through to the next competitive stage. The winner will be unveiled in late June. Council leader Ravi Govindia said: “A bridge specifically designed to carry high volumes of both cyclists and pedestrians will be a first for central London and poses a complex set of architectural, engineering and transport challenges.
“This is an extremely challenging brief and the competition gives us the best possible chance of finding the answers.”
Already, £26m has been committed to the project through the development of Nine Elms.
