A large part of Southfields Library's roof, which has just undergone £16,000 worth of roof repairs, has blown off in recent high winds.
The council recently paid out thousands to repair and install skylights in the Wimbledon Park Road library’s roof.
A source told the Wandsworth Guardian the roof had been blown “clean off” and it had recently been rocking and lifting in a moderate breeze.
A council spokesman confirmed that one of the large new skylights, which is nearly the full width of the building, was torn off by wind.
They are working with engineers to get it fixed. It is not known if any stock has been damaged.
A statement on the council’s website said: “Southfields library is closed due to damage caused by the recent high winds. Your nearest libraries are Earlsfield library and Wandsworth Town library.”
The roof repairs were announced with much fanfare after concerns were raised about the library’s future.
More to follow.
