A man has been jailed after a "nasty" attack in which he pushed a 93-year-old woman over in an attempted burglary.

Police were called at 6pm on October 31 to reports of a burglary at a pensioner’s home in Henry Twining Court, Clapham.

Monir Saleh, 27, of the Patmore estate, Battersea, had approached the woman from behind as she walked used her walking frame to go to the bins outside her house.

He pushed her back into her home causing her to fall to the floor, before searching through her shopping trolley.

He fled through a fire escape after he was disturbed by the victim's neighbours, who heard her screaming.

Saleh was caught on CCTV entering the premises and was arrested and charged with burglary on April 14.

Saleh pleaded guilty to attempted burglary on September 10 and was jailed for three years and four months at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, October 22.

Sentencing judge Usha Karu said: "I do not understand why you were trying to get into a residential care home for over 55s.

"I have no doubt the victim must have been terrified, shocked and disturbed; it is more by luck than anything else that she received no physical injury".

Detective Constable Luke Bielby from the Lambeth robbery squad said: "This was a nasty attack that left the victim extremely shaken, so I am especially pleased that Saleh will be serving a lengthy sentence for what he has done. Lambeth is a safer place with him behind bars."
