Twenty people were evacuated from a high-rise block of flats yesterday evening.

The blaze started in a stairwell in Palmerston House, Strasburg Road, Battersea, at about 7.30pm.

A woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by the London Ambulance Service and part of a fifth floor corridor was damaged.

Six fire engines and 35 fire fighters from Clapham, Lambeth, Battersea, Wandsworth and Brixton fire stations attended the blaze.

Watch Manager Andrew Wildsmith who was at the scene, said: “The corridor was heavily smoke-logged when we arrived and smoke had started to get into some of the flats, but once we tackled the fire and opened the windows and doors the smoke cleared quickly.

“Living in a flat is not more dangerous than living in a house, it’s just important residents know what to do if there is a fire in their block.”

The fire was under control by 8.50pm.
