Community campaigners across the borough have thrown their hats into the ring as Wandsworth builds towards next year's local elections.

Jon Irwin, a member of several campaign groups, plans to run as a Liberal Democrat candidate for Tooting.

He said: "I'm passionate about where I live. I think having got involved with the local community groups, that I have done over the past two years, that I have been able to make a positive difference."

Marie Hanson, who set up charity Storm after her son was stabbed and almost killed, has expressed plans to run as a Conservative candidate for Latchmere Ward.

Her charity was originally created to help single parents in the borough, but also helps youngsters get away from gun crime.

Rob Richman, of the Southfields Plaza campaign has also expressed an interested in running as an independent candidate for Southfields Ward.

Wandsworth Council is currently held by a large Conservative majority, with 47 Torie and 13 Labour councillors.

There has not been a Labour majority since the 1974 elections.

Hot on the heels of the local elections, set for May 22, will be the 2015 general election and the main parties are already preparing their candidates for the battle ahead

Will Martindale, who lives in the Shaftesbury Estate in Battersea, will aim to oust Tory Jane Ellison representing the Labour party in the next general election.

Mr Martindale said: "My priorities are housing and childcare. We have a lack of affordable housing, rip-off fees for private tenants, and sky-rocketing house prices, which are leaving many residents behind."

Dan Watkins, who has lived in the area for 12 years, will challenge Labour's Sadiq Khan for the Conservatives in Tooting.

He said: "I am thrilled to have the chance to stand at the next general election for the Conservatives in my home constituency.

"Living and working in Tooting as an entrepreneur, I care deeply about creating sustainable jobs."
