A cyclist has been taken to hospital with "life-changing" injuries after a collision with a lorry near Clapham Common.

It is understood the 28-year-old woman may lose the use of her arm after she became trapped beneath the heavy goods vehicle.

Lambeth police, however, were keen to point out her injuries were not "life-threatening".

The incident happened just after 8am this morning at the junction of Clapham Common North Side and Cedars Road.

One witness, who was waiting at a bus stop on Clapham Common North Side, said: "I didn't see the initial impact but it did look like she was dragged under the bonnet of the lorry.

"It was definitely a lorry, not as a long as a bus but just as wide. I covered my ears and turned away because I didn't want to see.

"The driver didn't realise what had happened but two men started waving at the driver and he stopped.

"I couldn't find my phone to call 999 but someone else already had.

"I could see other commuters had been affected by what they saw, some people were in tears as they continued their journey to work.

"I'm just so relieved to hear she is going to be okay because I think everyone feared worst."

The London Ambulance Service, the London Fire Brigade and the air ambulance were also at the scene. Clapham Common North remained closed between Wix’s Lane and Cedars Road to facilitate removal of the casualty and subsequent accident investigation.

No arrests have been made at present.
