Firefighters were called to a block of flats after a rubbish chute caught alight.

They were called to the blaze at 10.45pm to Sporle Court, in Winstanley Road, Battersea.

Nobody inside the flats were injured and they were able to escape before firecrews arrived.

It was put out by 11pm, with police investigating the cause of the blaze.

Firefighters remained at the scene to give fire safety advice to people affected.

This is the latest of a number of incidents during the last 12 months in housing estates in Battersea.

A spokesperson for the fire brigade said: "Rubbish in a chute caught alight and smoked out the top two thirds of the buildings.

"Smoke on the intermediate landings sent folk into a bit of a panic."
