A man has been charged with the murder of a heroic husband who died defending his wife and home.

Carlton Ned, 41, sacrificed himself to save his wife Donna Michael after gunmen burst into their house in Langdale Road, Thornton Heath, in the early hours of July 1, last year.

Mrs Michael, 51, was grazed by a bullet as Mr Ned intervened and was shot in the chest. He was treated by paramedics, but died at the scene.

Christopher Thomas, of Morrison House, Streatham Hill, has been charged with Mr Ned's murder.

The 21-year-old will appear in custody at Bexleyheath Magistrates Court on August 22.
