An Olympic torchbearer from Croydon is hoping to share her love of maths and science at a new Saturday school.

Jasmine McKenzie will carry the Olympic Flame in Reading in July, but the 16-year-old is so keen to share her passion for maths and science she will also be working as a teacher at a Purley Saturday school.

The teenager will be teaching the subjects to primary school pupils at the new school in Pepperford Road.

Uncommon Education Saturday school, is part of Uncommon Education Limited, which officially opened on March 31 by Jasmine, Jacqui Harding author and founder of children’s research and film production company Tomorrow’s Child.

The Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College student welcomed the opening of the new school.

She said: "I love science and the school will be my chance to share my passion with others."

The school will also offer English tutoring, a study skills and revision programme and plans to have a homework club for students.

Operations Director Alison Johnson said: "This is an exciting development for Uncommon Education as we want to engage with our students and their families outside of the usual weekday operations.

"By offering a mentor to each student we are ensuring they achieve on a personal level as well as an academic."

The school is aimed at pupils in years 5-8 and years 9-11 during term time.
