This is what Sutton is set to look like during the Olympics after it was given £50,000 to spend on decoration.

Sutton Council was given the funding by the GLA to spend on sprucing up the borough's streets ahead of next summer's Olympic Games.

The money will be spent on bunting, flag poles and other Olympic themed displays from Locog, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games', official supplier Icon.

The council could even choose to mow an Olympic design into parks if they use an official template.

The decorations will be put in place before the Olympic torch passes through Sutton and will stay throughout the Games.

Councillor Graham Tope, leisure spokesman at Sutton Council, said: “The Olympic torch is passing through Sutton on July 23 and we are planning a huge celebration in Sutton. The GLA has given every London borough money to spend on decorating their streets, and we will be using this to help to create a carnival atmosphere that will involve the whole community.

“This is going to be a once-in-a-life-time event, and we will be encouraging local businesses and residents to dress their homes and gardens, organise street parties and take to the streets to cheer the torch on its way.”

There are strict rules surrounding how the cash is spent and how the items can be displayed, to protect the Games' main sponsors.

Official banners and flags must not be on the front of shops, nor should banners or floor graphics appear immediately outside them.

Olympic flags must not be flown on roundabouts which are sponsored by businesses, and bouncy castles will be allowed at events and street parties "provided they are not promoting a brand that is not a London 2012 sponsor".

Bull and crap. If they have £50,000 to through away on party decor how can they justify cuts in funding for housing and families? Schools without libraries. Hospitals struggling. Everyone barely surviving. Bunting will solve it all.

So 32 London boroughs each have £50,000 to spend on bunting etc, that £1.6 million of our taxes that could be spent on education or healthcare. How many good things could be done with £1.6 million.
What a waste of earned money. We are going to be paying for these olympics for years to come.

£50,000, how many years would that of payed for the upkeep of the flower display which sat opposite Rose hill park which once welcomed visitors to slutton and has recently been turfed over?

The pic looks like a childrens' TV programme has thrown up over a normal high street.

Love the idea of an expensive fleeting spruce up for visitors, instead of a positive lasting change for residents. Good work!

Must get a list of the Olimprics main sponsors so I don't waste any money buying over-priced goods or services from them to subsidised their donations.

michael, good idea! (and love the new spelling). i couldn't care less about the olympics... what i do care about is empty businesses in the high street, too much litter, vandalism, christmas trees not being torn apart their first week up in public, grit, grit, grit & more police presence in the high street when all the (too many) pubs let the drunks out at night/ early morn... for starters. not decorations. ridiculous! if anything, complete/repair the last shambles of a sutton high street refurb.

I think it's hilarious that the government are desperate to convince us that the London Olympics will be good for the economy. Yes, temporarily there will be some extra local jobs, but they will soon disappear. It won't make up for the collapsed transport system and the long-term legacy of white-elephant sports venues.
