A man left in a critical condition after an attack in Wallington this morning was stabbed multiple times.

Police found the 43-year-old in Stafford Road at about 1.40am.

He had been stabbed multiple times in the back and once in the neck.

He is in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

The incident happened close to the junction with Milton Road.

A man and a woman have been arrested in connection with the incident and are being questioned at a south London police station.

Police have cordoned off a large part of the pavement in Stafford Road, and the entrance to Milton Road.

No weapon has been found at the scene.

Forensic teams have also been working in a block of flats Castlemead Court, opposite where the man was found, which is also cordoned off.

Forensic officers have also carried out searches of the pavement around where the man was found..

A large blood stain was visible under two tents which have been set up at the crime scene, outside Churchill's furniture shop.

Lauren Baldwin, 22, who lives above a nearby business, said she was woken by a man and a woman arguing in the street shortly before police arrived.

She said: "I was shaken awake by the shouting. It was going on a for a while. I couldn't hear what they were saying but you could tell it was serious.

"I looked out to see what was going on after a while, but I couldn't see anything. It wasn't long after that the emergency services turned up."

Residents said they were shocked at the incident in a normally quiet area. Pubs and fast-food restaurants in the area are all believed to have closed long before the attack took place.

Abdullah Okujucu, who owns Wallington Express kebab shop, situated yards from where the injured man was found, said: "I have been here eight years and there has never been any trouble outside my shop. I can't believe this has happened here."

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said paramedics were called shortly before 1.40am to reports of a stabbing. He said the man was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a serious condition.
