A mystery Sutton punter is believed to have scooped a whopping £1m by winning the jackpot on a National Lottery Monopoly scratchcard.

Rumours about the monster win began circling around Sutton's offices, pubs and bars last week but Camelot, who also run the National Lottery and Euromillions, refused to confirm the gossip.

Camelot would also not confirm which shop or newsagent the scratchcard was bought in, but it is understood to be in the borough of Sutton.

The same shop is also thought to have been the location of a six-figure win on the Euromillions Lottery in recent weeks.

On a standard Monopoly scratchcard, which cost £5 each, there are two separate games and bonus game.

Each card offers a potential fifteen chances of winning with prizes ranging from just £5 up to the top prize of £1m.

The National Lottery website claims punters have a 10-1 chance of winning £5 and those odds increase as the winning amount increases.

The odds of winning the second top prize, of £50,000, is 2,193,720-1 and taking the £1m prize means beating odds of more than 3,656,200-1.

Despite extremely high odds to win the very top prizes, the scratchcards offer a 4-1 chance of winning any cash prize on the card.

The £1m win means there is now just one £1m Monopoly ticket left as the other five have been claimed in the last year.

A spokesman for Camelot said: "Every jackpot winner is given the option of going public with their win.

"But, we cannot confirm or deny that someone has won the maximum prize on the Monopoly Scratchcard."

However, Camelot do allow the winning shop or newsagent to advertise that a winning ticket was bought on their premises three months after the win.
