A Conservative councillor shocked the cabinet last night when he suggested the council could do without its Black History Month events.

During a debate about cuts to the arts budget, Coun Adam Kellett, for Ashburton ward, said there were many “left-wing” projects the council could drop to save money.

He said: “In my opinion, and I stand to be corrected by my colleagues, there are projects we could do without so much, like Black History Month.”

After an outcry in the chamber, council Leader Mike Fisher said although his councillors were entitled to their opinions, he did “not share Mr Kellett’s personal view”.
