Campaigners are calling for the rethink of a traffic calming plan, which they claim will threaten a long-established crossing along the Wandle Trail.

London Assembly Member Jenny Jones has joined campaigners in Wandsworth to highlight the threat to Kimber Road crossing, which links two parts of King George's Park and forms part of the trail.

According to those trying to raise awareness about the issue, the crossing is one of 145 across London slated for removal by London Mayor Boris Johnson to smooth traffic flow for drivers.

They claim its loss would effectively cut the park into two for families with children, elderly residents, walkers and cyclists of all ages, as well as dog-walkers.

Valerie Taylor, Wandsworth Society chairwoman, said: “Not having this crossing would be disastrous for anyone using King George's Park. Is Transport for London not aware of the Wandle Trail - and the potential that this has for the planned Wandle Valley Regional Park?”

Robert Molteno, member of the Wandsworth Environment Forum, said: “A Wandsworth Living Streets group is being launched at a public meeting on November 8 and will be looking at the eight crossings threatened for removal borough-wide.

“Our aim is to work locally to create safe, attractive and enjoyable streets across Wandsworth.”
