A drunk bus driver was jailed after crashing his double-decker into a van causing it to flip over, crushing another car, and damaging another on Sunday.

Powel Matykiewicz, 36, caused chaos on Streatham High Road when close to three times the legal alcohol driving limit, he ploughed the 118 bus he was driving in to a parked Mercedes Sprinter shortly before 1am.

An eyewitness described how the £30,000 van flipped over and landed directly on top of another parked car.

Another moving car was also damaged in the incident.

Remarkably, just one passenger on board the southbound 118 bus was hurt. Paramedics treated them for minor injuries.

Chris Harrigan, manager at the Holland Tringham pub in Streatham High Road, close to where the accident took place, walked home at 2am and saw the damage.

He said: “It was absolute destruction. Where the passenger side door is on the bus was smashed in.

There was a big blue van lying on top of a parked car.”

He added: “I'm really surprised no one was seriously hurt, considering the damage.”

The road was shut closed for several hours while accident investigators surveyed the scene, and the wreckage was cleared up.

Matykiewicz, of Cameron Square, Mitcham, was arrested at the scene and later charged.

He was jailed for 16 weeks and disqualified from driving for three years, after pleading guilty at Camberwell Green Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to drink driving.

Did you see what happened? Do you own one of the vehicles? Did you take a picture of the scene?
