Kingston Council’s executive committee launched a scathing attack on residents of Mayfair Close last night who wanted their road sign to be changed from Tolworth to Surbiton.

Council leader Derek Osbourne asked why the “nonsense” item had brought to the executive committee and asked the member for environment, sustainability and climate change, Councillor Bob Steed, to draft a report which would ensure such matters were dealt with at a neighbourhood level in future.

Residents were unhappy that when the road signs in Mayfair Close were replaced in October, they bore reference to it being in Tolworth.

Eighteen out of 20 residents of Mayfair Close, incensed at the decision, then presented a petition to the council on November 12.

Councillor Steed said the residents felt part of Surbiton and a change to the road sign would cost just £50.

The executive approved the plans and agreed to amend the locality boundaries to include Mayfair Close in Surbiton.

However Coun Osbourne said: “I don’t care, let’s just do it.

“But, we have got to be clear that this is not a means by which anybody who thinks their house is in Surbiton can come to the council to make changes and increase the value of their house.”

Tolworth councillor Rob Lee said: “I am aware some residents on the cusp of the boundary have an issue with whether they are in Surbiton or Tolworth but I am very proud to be a Tolworth resident.”
