A long serving councillor and one of the top people at the Imperial War Museum are just two of the people from Croydon named in the New Year's Honours list.

Councillor Margaret Mead was first elected for the ward of Heathfield in May 1990 and has served on numerous council committees, including her current role as the vice-chairwoman of the health and wellbeing board.

During her mayoral year, from 2009 to 2010, her theme was to improve the lives of Croydon’s most vulnerable people while recognising the borough’s many volunteers who make such a difference.

She has been a governor of Courtwood and Forestdale primary schools for more than 20 years and was elected head of governors at Forestdale a few months ago.

Mrs Mead is also a committee member of Forestdale Residents Association.

She has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for civic and community services in Croydon.

Stephen Guyon, the lead for rough sleeping and single homelessness at the Department for Communities and Local Government, has become an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Mr Guyon, from Coulsdon, has been given the honour for services to rough sleepers.

The head of exhibitions at Imperial War Museum, Ann Carter, from Croydon, has been appointed a MBE for services to museums.

And Celia Romain, from Thornton Heath, has been made an MBE for services to public administration.

She is a higher executive officer in the apprenticeships unit at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
