Sprinkler systems have been fitted in sheltered housing blocks, in a move that has been hailed as a great example to other councils and housing associations.
The sprinklers will help protect people who would not be able to get out of their homes on their own if there is a fire in their own flat.
To celebrate the installation of the systems London Fire Brigade presented Croydon Council with a certificate at one of the first buildings to be fitted, Truscott House in Thornton Heath.
London Fire Brigade’s borough commander for Croydon, David Lindridge, said: “One of our priorities is to reduce fires in care homes and sheltered accommodation so it’s great news that Croydon Council has agreed to install sprinkler systems in six of its existing sheltered housing complexes.
“We’re delighted at the example they’re setting and we hope that more local authorities and housing providers will follow its example.”
As well as Truscott House, Brookhurst Court in South Norwood has been fitted with sprinklers and four more are to follow in the next month.
