A private mansion block next to Battersea Park had to be evacuated last night after a gas leak.

Seven elderly residents were taken to a shelter and given cups of tea by the council.

It is understood a builder accidentally cut through a pipe, causing the leak, at about 4pm. The gas supply was turned off and the area made safe.

The London Fire Brigade sent two engines from Clapham and Battersea and set up a 25m cordon around the site.

The police closed the road between Kassala Road and Beechmore Road.

A spokesman for National Grid said: "We were called to attend a report of a damaged gas pipe in a loft in Prince of Wales Drive. The property was evacuated by a porter and neighbouring properties were evacuated by police.

"National Grid engineers made the scene safe and the residents were subsequently allowed back in. Initial investigations found that builders had cut through a gas service pipe."

The number for people to call if they smell gas or have concerns about gas safety is 0800 111 999.
