Litterbugs are being named and shamed by Wandsworth Council.

Ten men, who did not pay fines when they were caught dropping cigarette butts, have ended up in court.

All were given fixed penalty notices for breaking environmental protection laws. They had 14 days to pay an £80 fine, reduced to £55 if paid within ten days.

But because none of them paid anything, the cases ended up in front of magistrates who imposed stiffer penalties.

All the fines were for dropping cigarette butts outside Tooting Broadway or Clapham Junction stations.

Your Local Guardian: Councillor Jonathan Cook warned some street collections are scams

Councillor Jonathan Cook, the council’s environment spokesman, said: “These cigarettes could turn out to be the most expensive ones ever smoked.

“What we want to make quite clear is that anyone who dumps litter, whether it’s a cigarette butt, an empty food wrapper, or a bin bag full of waste, runs the risk of being given a penalty notice. These cases highlight the folly of choosing not to pay.”
