Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision in West Croydon where a man was hit by an articulated lorry.

The victim, believed to be in his 80s, was struck in Wellesley Road, near the junction with Station Road, at about 2.40pm yesterday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A driver, who was several vehicles behind the lorry, said there was a funeral going on at St Mary’s Catholic Church and she believes the dead man may have come from the church.

His next of kin have been informed but he has not yet been formally identified.

A postmortem examination will be held in due course.

Detectives would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision or the moments leading up to it.

The driver stopped and was not arrested.
