Police stormed into Wimbledon Station this afternoon after a passenger reported an abandoned rucksack on a train.

Officers rushed to the platform receiving the London Waterloo to Guildford train after the suspicious bag was reported unattended at Earlsfield.

With Surrey Police on standby for back-up, British Transport Police officers parked in The Broadway and waited for the train to arrive in Wimbledon.

Sisley White, who was at Wimbledon station when police arrived, tweeted: "Something is going on at Wimbledon Station. Police everywhere, very loud sirens. I hope what ever it is everyone is alright."

However, officers' fears were allayed when they discovered it was all a big misunderstanding.

A passenger reported the suspicious rucksack just before 4pm when its owner left it on the train at Earlsfield.

But after the owner realised he was missing his bag he quickly got back on the train and continued on his journey.

A spokesman for BTP said police were no longer treating the incident as suspicious.

Officers left Wimbledon Station at 4.45pm.
