First they said Putney Bridge would be closed for six months; then they said it would be closed for three, now they have announced it will open after just 75 days.

Wandsworth Council has announced the bridge’s £1.5m repairs are coming to a close and the bridge will fully reopen on Friday, September 26.

Some road users described the area as ‘chaos’, traffic jams built up and businesses reported the closure affecting their trade.

Transport spokesman, Councillor Jonathan Cook, said: “I would like to thank the travelling public for the great patience they have shown and feel sure that they, along with local businesses, will share our delight that this important Thames river crossing will be back to normal before the end of this month.

“Getting a job of this scale completed early, properly and also very importantly on budget is a real triumph.”
